surf El Salvador

El Salvador has been attracting increasing numbers of international surfers, and several practical factors explain the growth. Experienced local surfers point out that the country offers conditions that competitors rarely find together in a single location.

đŸ„â€â™‚ïž Wave Quality and Consistency

One of the biggest advantages is the high level of wave consistency, particularly in spots such as El Sunzal.

Surfers report that usable waves are available on approximately 360 days per year, a frequency that is difficult to match globally.

In many popular surf destinations, waves close quickly, providing only a few seconds of ride time. At El Sunzal, riders commonly stay on a wave for significantly longer, and this is one of the characteristics that has impressed both local and foreign surfers.

In addition to everything mentioned above, along El Salvador’s coastline there are several beaches suitable for surfing.

Besides the most well-known ones, in 2025 the government of El Salvador inaugurated another circuit called Surf City 2, after building a road to provide easier access to beaches in the eastern part of the country.

🌡 Comfortable Water Temperature

The water temperature remains warm throughout the year, allowing surfers to practice without wetsuits.

This not only improves comfort but also reduces the need to travel with additional gear.

😄 Hospitality and Cultural Appeal

Visitors frequently comment on the friendly atmosphere, good food, and relaxed environment.

Could it be that the vibe of most Salvadorans somehow fits with the laid-back vibe that is traditionally associated with surfing?

Surfers usually arrive because of the waves, but many end up exploring other parts of the country — lakes, towns, and coastal areas — turning a surf trip into a broader tourism experience.

🩈 Shark Risk: Extremely Rare Incidents

As in any ocean environment, sharks are part of the ecosystem. However, documented attacks in El Salvador are extremely rare.

In roughly the last 75 years, only three shark attacks have been reported:

 • 1950: A fisherman aboard a tuna boat
 • 1993: Two attacks recorded on the same day

The most recent confirmed incident occurred over 30 years ago. Based on available data, the probability of a shark attack is extremely low, and surfers generally practice with confidence.

🏆 International Surf Events

El Salvador has hosted globally recognized surfing events. When these competitions are broadcast, they highlight the country’s wave quality to a worldwide audience, encouraging more surfers to visit.

A contributing factor is that national tourism authorities have experience with the sport and have promoted surfing as an economic opportunity.

📌 Summary of Advantages

El Salvador offers a combination of conditions that are attractive to surfers:

 • Consistent waves
 • Long rides
 • Warm water
 • Friendly tourism environment
 • Additional activities beyond surfing
 • Extremely rare shark incidents

For many surfers, these characteristics make El Salvador a destination worth considering on an international level.

The post How Did El Salvador Become Safe? Miraculously, all the pieces fell into place appeared first on El Salvador EN.

]]>
The question of how El Salvador transformed from one of the world’s most dangerous countries into a remarkably safe nation is complex. It’s a story that spans decades, involving deep-seated gang structures, controversial policies, and a decisive government crackdown.

To understand the present, we must first look at a painful past.

how did El Salvador become safe?
El Salvador’s security cabinet gathered. Leading the meeting is President Nayib Bukele. Also pictured are Gustavo Villatoro (Minister of Public Security), Merino Monroy (Minister of National Defense), the Attorney General of the Republic, and Mauricio Arriaza Chicas (Director General of the National Police).

A Legacy of Violence: From Civil War to Transnational Crime

El Salvador’s modern struggle began long before the recent headlines. The nation endured a bloody Cold War-era civil war, a proxy conflict where global powers like the United States and the Soviet Union used the country as a chessboard. The aftermath left a fractured society.

From the ashes of that conflict, gangs began to form in the 1990s. What started as local groups of troubled youth evolved into sophisticated, transnational criminal structures—MS-13 and Barrio 18.

Over the decades, these gangs were responsible for the murders of over 200,000 Salvadorans, holding the nation hostage through extortion and terror.

As Minister of Public Security, Gustavo Villatoro, has pointed out in interviews, a critical factor in this escalation was international pressure in the 1990s.

El Salvador, like other Latin American nations, was forced to adopt legal reforms that, while framed as progressive, were in practice “perverse laws” designed to give criminals an advantage, leading to a surge in violence.

The Turning Point: A Spiritual Recognition and a Political Decision

For years, the situation seemed uncontrollable. Then, in March 2022, a single weekend of extreme violence—a coordinated massacre by the gangs intended to terrorize and pressure the government—became the catalyst for change.

President Nayib Bukele, alongside key figures like Minister Gustavo Villatoro, Defense Minister René Merino Monroy, and the National Police Director, recognized the situation was spiraling.

In a revealing interview with Tucker Carlson, Bukele stated they acknowledged the problem was not just physical but also spiritual. After praying for guidance, they made a historic decision.

The “Regimen de ExcepciĂłn”: A Controversial Strategy for Peace

The government’s response was the implementation of a State of Exception (“RĂ©gimen de ExcepciĂłn”). This special regime suspended certain constitutional rights, allowing for mass arrests.

Due to the years of intelligence gathering, the police already had detailed profiles of tens of thousands of gang members.

The security forces—both police and soldiers who had been patrolling the streets for nearly two decades—didn’t need to start from scratch. They simply went to their homes and arrested them.

The operation was sweeping:

 • Anyone with gang-related tattoos was detained.
 • Mass raids targeted known gang strongholds.
 • Citizen tip-offs were aggressively pursued.

This is also why the Salvadoran government takes a hardline stance today. Under Salvadoran law, gangs are legally designated as terrorist organizations.

Therefore, the government’s position is that it is far more cost-effective—in both human and economic terms—to prevent a child from becoming a gang member and to judge any aspirant “gangster” for terrorism, than to allow the tragic cycle of the past to repeat itself.

A New Chapter

The “RĂ©gimen de ExcepciĂłn” remains a topic of intense international debate regarding human rights. However, its impact on public safety is undeniable for most Salvadorans. The streets, once ruled by fear, are now open to families and businesses.

El Salvador’s journey to safety was not an overnight miracle. It was the result of a government’s drastic decision to confront a spiritual and criminal crisis head-on, using pre-existing intelligence to dismantle the terrorist structures that had plagued the nation for a generation.

The story of how El Salvador became safe is the story of a nation deciding it would not let its history dictate its future.

A Note on This Explanation

It is important to acknowledge that this overview provides a simplified, high-level account of a deeply complex and multifaceted situation.

While we have focused on key events and details we believe are crucial for context—such as the historical roots of the violence, the impact of certain international policies, and the specific governmental response—this narrative is not exhaustive.

Numerous other social, economic, and political factors have played significant roles in El Salvador’s journey. This brief explanation aims to highlight essential points that should not be overlooked, but it is not a complete historical or analytical record.

Why Are There Moments When the Sky Looks So Beautiful in El Salvador? https://elsalvadoren.com/el-salvador/why-are-there-moments-when-the-sky-looks-so-beautiful-in-el-salvador/ Thu, 20 Nov 2025 21:31:20 +0000 https://elsalvadoren.com/?post_type=key_sv&p=4284 There are moments when the sky in El Salvador is painted with tones that blend the orange hues of sunset with violet shades.

The post Why Are There Moments When the Sky Looks So Beautiful in El Salvador? appeared first on El Salvador EN.

]]>
example sky in El Salvador
This image illustrates approximately 50% of the beauty we are referring to. We believe it approximates it quite well in the color tones. Seeing it in person is completely different.

El Salvador often surprises people—not just with bright sunsets over the ocean, but with stunning skies that appear even when you’re nowhere near the beach and not even facing the sun.

San Salvador

Many residents in San Salvador have experienced this: about 30 to 60 minutes before sunset, the sky suddenly turns into a canvas of orange, pink, and violet tones.

The beauty isn’t coming directly from the setting sun, but from the way its last rays illuminate the clouds across the entire sky.

Here’s why it happens:

1. The Angle of the Sun’s Light

As the sun descends, its light has to travel through more of Earth’s atmosphere. This filters out shorter wavelengths of light (blues and greens) and allows longer wavelengths (reds, oranges, pinks) to dominate.

When clouds are present, they act like giant reflectors, scattering this warm light across the sky—even behind you or toward the opposite horizon.

2. The Type and Height of the Clouds

Not all clouds create this effect. Mid- to high-level clouds, like altocumulus or cirrus, catch the low-angle sunlight exceptionally well. In San Salvador’s tropical climate, these cloud layers often form during the late afternoon, creating the perfect conditions for colorful illumination.

3. Humidity and Atmospheric Particles

Moisture in the air, along with tiny particles from natural sources (like volcanic dust or sea salt from the Pacific), can amplify scattering. This enhances the depth and richness of the colors, especially the transition from orange to purple.

4. The Geography of the Valley

San Salvador sits in a valley surrounded by mountains. These elevated horizons mean the sun “disappears” earlier behind the landscape, but its rays continue to travel above and illuminate the cloud layers overhead. This creates the effect of a glowing sky even after the sun is no longer visible.

5. Not Every Day Creates the Same Conditions

The phenomenon doesn’t happen every afternoon because it depends on precise timing: cloud placement, light angle, and atmospheric clarity. When the conditions align, the sky looks extraordinary—almost painted—regardless of where you’re standing.

sky
Personally, I only remember having seen it in San Salvador, but this photo shows that similar tones can also be seen in the coastal area. It’s worth mentioning that I hardly ever visit the coastal area.

You don’t need to be by the ocean or stare directly at the sunset. In El Salvador, the sky sometimes becomes a natural light show simply because the atmosphere is bending, filtering, and scattering sunlight in just the right way.

A Cultural Note: “Cielos de pĂșrpura y de oro”

This phenomenon is so common and striking that it has even found its way into national symbolism. In El Salvador’s OraciĂłn a la Bandera, the country is described as having “cielos de pĂșrpura y de oro”—which translates to “skies of purple and gold”.

Although the phrase is poetic, it reflects what people genuinely see on certain afternoons: clouds glowing in golden tones that shift toward purples and violets as the sun’s final rays spread across the sky. It’s a natural sight that resonates with the imagery found in the national text.

Minimum Wage in El Salvador: Complete Guide https://elsalvadoren.com/el-salvador/minimum-wage/ Thu, 20 Nov 2025 20:28:20 +0000 https://elsalvadoren.com/?post_type=key_sv&p=4392 Find out El Salvador’s minimum wage, sector-specific rates, the deductions applied, and other related details.

The post Minimum Wage in El Salvador: Complete Guide appeared first on El Salvador EN.

]]>
Understanding the minimum wage in El Salvador is important for employers, employees, and anyone doing business or research in the country. In El Salvador, the minimum wage is not determined by city or region. Instead, it is defined entirely by economic sector, and each sector has a different monthly rate.

In June 2025, the government approved a 12% increase across all sectors, raising the national minimum wage to new levels.

This image shows the history of the increase in the minimum wage in El Salvador. Each President has had to gradually adjust the minimum wage to adapt to the rising cost of living (or devaluation of fiat money). The last president who had to make this adjustment was Nayib Bukele.

Current Minimum Wage in El Salvador

El Salvador sets its minimum wage based on the type of work performed. The main categories include:

1. Commerce, Services, and Industry

Monthly minimum wage: US$408.80

2. Maquila (Textile and Apparel Manufacturing)

Monthly minimum wage: US$402.26

3. Agriculture

 • General agricultural work: US$272.72 per month
 • Coffee and sugar harvest tasks may vary.

4. Agro-Industry (Sugar Mills)

Workers in sugar processing have a separate wage structure. The minimum wage for the agro-industry sector (sugar mills) in El Salvador is US$408.80 USD per month. Workers paid by unit of work earn US$5.018 per ton of sugarcane or US$10.035 per task, according to the latest national wage decree.

Does the Minimum Wage Vary by Region?

No. The minimum wage is the same across all departments and cities in El Salvador. The applicable wage depends solely on the economic sector, not the geographic location.

Take-Home Pay: Understanding Deductions

Although minimum wage amounts are set as gross monthly salaries, employees receive a lower net salary after mandatory deductions such as:

 • ISSS (Social Security)
 • AFP (Pension fund)
 • Income tax (only for higher salaries)

Income tax in El Salvador now only applies to monthly salaries above US$550. This change came from a proposal by President Nayib Bukele (and his political party) to raise the income-tax exemption limit. Previously, the exemption was US$472 per month.

Employees in El Salvador also face mandatory social security deductions from their gross salary: ISSS (social security) contributions are 3% of the gross wage (up to a limit), while AFP (pension fund) contributions amount to 7.25%.

These deductions reduce the take-home (net) pay for minimum-wage and other workers.

Is the Minimum Wage Enough to Live On?

For a single person, the minimum wage can generally cover basic needs such as food, transportation, and modest living arrangements. Individuals who live alone but spend carefully, or who share housing with others, can usually manage.

For a family, however, the minimum wage is not sufficient. The cost of food, utilities, transportation, and education exceeds what a single minimum-wage income can support.

This is why it is very common for both partners—man and woman—to work in order to sustain the household.

The situation becomes even more challenging when it comes to renting a place to live. Rental prices in El Salvador have increased significantly in recent years, especially in urban areas like San Salvador, Santa Tecla, and Antiguo CuscatlĂĄn.

As a result, the portion of income required to pay rent is now much higher, making it even harder for minimum-wage workers to secure decent housing. Many households opt for shared housing or rely on combined family income to afford rent.

How Often Is the Minimum Wage Updated?

El Salvador reviews the minimum wage every three years, although the government can propose earlier adjustments depending on economic conditions.

Why the Minimum Wage Matters

The minimum wage influences:

 • Labor costs for businesses
 • Worker living standards
 • Economic competitiveness
 • Household financial stability

Even with periodic increases, the rise in living costs and the high rate of informal employment mean many workers still face financial pressure.

Conclusion

The minimum wage in El Salvador varies by economic sector but is uniform nationwide. While it can be enough for a single person living modestly, it is not sufficient to support a family—especially considering rising rent prices.

As a result, dual-income households are the norm, and understanding minimum wage levels is essential for both workers and employers.

Understanding El Salvador’s Crime Rate https://elsalvadoren.com/el-salvador/crime-rate/ Sun, 16 Nov 2025 05:34:37 +0000 https://elsalvadoren.com/?post_type=key_sv&p=4149 Learn more about the crime rate in El Salvador: Is extensive data available, or do they focus only on one type of crime?

The post Understanding El Salvador’s Crime Rate appeared first on El Salvador EN.

]]>
When searching for “El Salvador crime rate,” many people expect to find comprehensive statistics covering all types of criminal activities. However, the reality is more nuanced and reflects a strategic approach to public security that has yielded remarkable results.

The Focus on What Matters Most

El Salvador has achieved what many considered impossible – transforming from one of the most dangerous countries in the world to the safest in the Western Hemisphere.

This dramatic shift is best measured through homicide rates, which have plummeted from 103 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2015 to just 0.74 in 2025. This isn’t just a number; it represents thousands of lives saved and communities reclaimed from violence.

Key achievements:

 • ✅ Historic homicide reduction from 103 to 0.74 per 100,000
 • ✅ Western Hemisphere’s safest country ranking
 • ✅ Tangible security improvements felt nationwide

Why Homicides Take Center Stage

For decades, homicides dominated El Salvador’s security landscape to such an extent that they became the primary metric for measuring public safety.

The sheer scale of violence meant that other crimes, while significant, received less public attention. This focus wasn’t about hiding information but rather addressing the most immediate threat to human life and national stability.

The Police Transformation Story

With over 40,000 officers in the National Civil Police, El Salvador now has unprecedented capacity to address crime comprehensively. The removal of most gang members from circulation has fundamentally changed police operations.

Police capacity highlights:

 • đŸ‘źâ€â™‚ïž Over 40,000 trained officers nationwide
 • 🔄 Resources redirected from gang investigations to broader crime prevention
 • 🎯 Focus expanded to include all types of criminal activities

Police can now dedicate more time to investigating, capturing, and minimizing other types of crimes that previously received less attention due to the overwhelming gang violence.

To give an example (You can see the publication from the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic here), a group of foreigners in El Salvador attempted to open 3 ATMs. That happened one day and the next day the prosecutor’s office and the police had already captured them.

Everything depends on how quickly the investigation progresses so that the police together with the prosecutor’s office can remove from circulation those who commit crimes.

International Context Matters

It’s important to understand that very few countries publish complete crime statistics for all offense types. The expectation that every nation should provide detailed data on every crime category is unrealistic.

Countries with comprehensive crime data:

 • đŸ‡ș🇾 United States (FBI Uniform Crime Reporting)
 • 🇬🇧 United Kingdom
 • 🇹🇩 Canada

Most nations prioritize reporting the crimes most relevant to their specific security challenges, and El Salvador follows this common international practice.

The Current Security Reality

While El Salvador doesn’t publish detailed statistics for every crime category, the improvement in public security is undeniable and experienced daily by residents and visitors alike.

The country’s achievement in becoming the Western Hemisphere’s safest nation isn’t just about numbers – it’s about the tangible sense of safety that people feel in their neighborhoods, businesses, and public spaces.

Important perspective:

 • 🛡 Yes, incidents occur – as they do in every country worldwide
 • ⚡ But police response is now immediate and effective
 • 📈 Continuous improvement across all security metrics

The transformation continues as police operations target remaining criminal elements while simultaneously addressing other types of crimes. This balanced approach ensures that security gains are maintained and expanded across all areas of public safety.
