San Salvador — the vibrant capital of El Salvador — has just welcomed back one of its oldest and most iconic public spaces. The historic Plaza Simón Bolívar (Simón Bolívar Square), located in the city’s historic downtown, has been fully restored and re-opened to the public as of November 2025.
What’s New — What Was Preserved

The plaza’s origins date back to the mid-19th century, when it was known as the Plaza de Santo Domingo. By the late 1800s — around 1891 — it had already taken the name Plaza Bolívar, accompanied by several urban improvements typical of that era.
Although it does not have a single formal “opening date” like a modern public park, the site is well over a century old and deeply embedded in the historical fabric of San Salvador.
📍 A Historic Spot — But Not Exactly in the Heart of the Core
While Plaza Simón Bolívar is located in downtown San Salvador, it is not as central as landmark sites like the National Palace or the new National Library.
The plaza sits about 800 meters south of the National Palace, along the route toward Parque Cuscatlán, a much more popular and frequently visited public park.
Because of this, Plaza Simón Bolívar tends to be quieter and less crowded — making it an appealing stop for visitors who enjoy walking and exploring beyond the main tourist points.
