El Salvador Joins the Board of Peace as a Founding Member

Board of Peace

Yesterday, Tuesday, January 27, 2026, it was made public that El Salvador has joined the Board of Peace as a founding member. The Board of Peace is a recently created international organization that already brings together several countries and seeks to open new spaces for dialogue and mediation at the international level.

This initiative emerges at a time when the United Nations has been losing reputation as a mediator in conflicts. Beyond political deadlock and vetoes among major powers, in recent years it has also become increasingly known that different UN bodies finance or promote political and ideological agendas, which has fueled public distrust.

In this context, it is not surprising that some countries are opting for alternative mechanisms, seeking more agile structures that are less constrained by historical interests. Joining this type of organization does not imply abandoning other international forums, but it does reflect a search for new paths in response to the wear and tear of the traditional model.

That said, it is reasonable to maintain certain doubts. Every international organization responds to interests, and the Board of Peace has not yet demonstrated how it will make decisions, how it will be financed, or how independent it will be in practice.

Even so, in an international landscape where confidence in existing institutions is no longer the same, there remains an expectation that this new effort may, at the very least, attempt to do things better.

Time will tell whether it becomes a real alternative or just another actor in an increasingly fragmented international system.

For its part, El Salvador, like other countries, has decided to join this new international organization. Only time will show whether the Board of Peace becomes firmly established and, if so, how much weight it will carry when it comes to helping resolve international conflicts.

Let us recall that the Board of Peace was initiated by President Trump, whom we have seen mediating and resolving (whether temporarily or in a more lasting manner) armed conflicts in different parts of the world.

Regardless of whether these conflicts have been definitively resolved or not, one of the characteristics that has defined President Trump (across his two terms, but especially in the current one) is his tendency to present himself as someone who seeks to resolve conflicts between countries.
