
During the visit for the inauguration of President Nayib Bukele for his second term, spanning 2024 to 2029, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill, had a significant meeting with Sun Yeli, Special Envoy of the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping. Sun Yeli also serves as China’s Minister of Culture and Tourism.
In this engagement, Sun Yeli reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for President Bukele’s administration and highlighted the excellent opportunity this moment presents to update and deepen bilateral relations, especially in terms of cooperation.
He pointed out the mutual benefits and ongoing joint efforts that have contributed to the strong bonds between the two nations.
“It is an honor to be here representing my Government. This meeting highlights the high level of friendship, trust, and mutual affection that El Salvador and China maintain, which has also been reflected in various fields of joint collaboration and benefits for both parties“
stated the Chinese minister.
Yeli emphasized significant infrastructure projects such as the construction of the National Library and the forthcoming National Stadium of El Salvador, noting how these strategic initiatives have strengthened ties between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Hill expressed her gratitude for China’s steadfast support and collaboration. She reiterated El Salvador’s interest in continuing to fortify these relations, stating, “China is a fundamental and strategic partner for El Salvador, and it is a relationship we are eager to continue strengthening.”
The meeting also saw the presence of Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adriana Mira.

In a related development from a few weeks ago, Zhang Yanhui, the Chinese Ambassador to El Salvador, announced that China will soon begin military cooperation with El Salvador.
The Chinese military attaché is expected to arrive in El Salvador in the next month or two, marking a new phase in the bilateral relationship. This follows the recent approval by the Salvadoran government for this cooperation.
Additionally, the relationship between China and El Salvador, which began in 2018, has seen substantial growth under President Bukele’s administration.

The two nations have collaborated on numerous initiatives, including infrastructure projects like the National Library and a new amusement park in La Libertad. Ongoing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) further signify the deepening ties, with commercial exchanges anticipated to commence soon.
Sun Yeli’s participation in the visit to assist in President Bukele’s inauguration ceremony was seen as a testament to the robust bilateral relationship between China and El Salvador.
The event underscored the commitment of both nations to work together on initiatives that benefit the Salvadoran population and foster mutual development.
