As of 2025, Japan and El Salvador mark a milestone of 90 years in a fruitful and dynamic relationship that has evolved significantly since its inception.
Over nine decades, starting from their first diplomatic engagement on February 15, 1935, these two nations have fostered a relationship characterized by mutual respect, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges. The Embassy of Japan in El Salvador commemorated this special anniversary by releasing a video on its social media platforms, celebrating the progress and the milestones achieved through the years.
One of the earliest signs of this deepening relationship was El Salvador becoming one of the pioneering countries in the Western Hemisphere to import Japanese vehicles back in 1953. This move was more than a trade deal; it was a symbol of trust and a step towards a strengthened economic relationship that has endured to this day.
In addition to trade, the nations have cooperated in various developmental projects that have benefited El Salvador significantly. Among these, Japan’s contribution through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) stands out.

Although JICA has evolved its focus over the years, its past initiatives included enriching the Salvadoran academic scene by offering Japanese language courses at the University of El Salvador (UES), using the comprehensive “Minna No Nihongo” textbooks. This program encouraged cultural exchange and deepened the understanding between the citizens of both countries.
Another tangible representation of Japan’s commitment to El Salvador’s development was the construction of the Gerardo Barrios Bypass, an infrastructure project essential for Salvadoran mobility and trade. Funded through a generous loan from Japan, this project underscores the practical and supportive facets of the bilateral relationship.
It’s noteworthy to mention that the historical context during World War II did not significantly derail the mutual respect between the nations.
Despite geopolitical pressures, El Salvador, under the leadership of Maximiliano Hernández Martínez, maintained a non-aggressive stance towards Japan. This nuanced diplomacy paved the way for a resilient post-war relationship, demonstrating that even during periods of global conflict, the seeds of friendship, once sown, can withstand the test of time.
Reflecting on this 90-year journey, the current Japanese Ambassador to El Salvador, Yoshitaka Oshino, highlighted the significance of this anniversary, embodying the enduring friendship and cooperation that have been hallmarks of the Japan-El Salvador relationship.
Interesting fact: Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, used to own the official Yamaha motorcycle dealership in the country. Before becoming president, he traveled to Japan at least once.
As both countries look forward to continuing this fruitful association, the story of their diplomacy, from vehicle trades and infrastructure projects to cultural exchanges, remains a testament to what patience, understanding, and mutual respect can achieve.
Thus, as we acknowledge this 90th anniversary, it’s clear that the relationship between Japan and El Salvador transcends mere formalities, embodying a deep-seated partnership that continues to grow, innovate, and inspire.
