In August 2025, the Ministry of Education of El Salvador announced a new set of rules to strengthen discipline and presentation standards in public schools. These measures are part of a nationwide effort to promote respect, order, and personal responsibility among students.
Under the new regulations, students are required to maintain a clean uniform, polished shoes, proper posture, and an appropriate haircut. Hairstyles that do not align with these new discipline standards — including the popular “Edgar haircut” and similar modern styles — are no longer permitted within the public education system.
The “Edgar cut,” widely recognized in North America for its straight front fringe and high fade, became popular among young Mexican-American communities before spreading to other regions.
However, in El Salvador’s new school guidelines, such styles are considered inconsistent with the image of neatness and discipline that schools aim to promote.
Although the rules do not target any specific hairstyle, any haircut or style that does not comply with the new presentation guidelines is automatically considered prohibited.
School staff will ensure daily compliance with these appearance standards as part of fostering an environment of order and civility.
The initiative reflects the government’s goal of reinforcing positive values, self-respect, and discipline among the younger generation — starting with how students present themselves in the classroom.
