Exploring El Salvador by car is an enriching experience that allows you the freedom to discover its landscapes, cities, and coasts at your own pace. However, the process of renting a vehicle can be challenging if you are not familiar with the procedures and local regulations.
To ensure your experience is as smooth and enjoyable as possible, we have compiled a detailed list of essential tips and considerations for renting a car in El Salvador.
In El Salvador, rental and service companies are not known for trying to scam or deceive tourists (as is often the case in many other countries, such as some in Southeast Asia). Although El Salvador is not characterized by these bad practices (in fact, I would say it’s not a normal attitude in El Salvador), it is always good to take precautions and pay attention to details.
Things to Keep in Mind
Before Renting: Visual Confirmation of the Vehicle
When searching for options online, request real and up-to-date photos of the car you will be given. Confirming that you receive exactly what you expect is crucial to avoid surprises.
Visual Documentation Upon Receiving the Vehicle
It’s imperative to take photos and videos of the current state of the car (interior and exterior) at the time of delivery to avoid misunderstandings and charges for pre-existing damages.
Verification of Mandatory Items
Ensure the car includes a wheel key, spare tire, a cone, and an extinguisher. Not having the cone and extinguisher can result in infractions during inspections, as it is mandatory for each vehicle to have them.
Communication with the Rental Company
Keeping an open and effective communication channel with the rental company is vital, so you should have either internet access (if communicating via WhatsApp) or a local phone number for calls.
Consider purchasing a local SIM card to facilitate this, especially in emergencies. SIM cards are inexpensive, costing around $3, and you’ll have a phone number for your stay. Just remember these are usually prepaid, so you’ll need to top up credit for calls.
If you just bought the SIM card, don’t worry as they usually come with courtesy credit. Always make sure to keep credit on your number in case you ever need to make a call.
Insurance Policy
In addition to the rental fee, you will be obligated to pay for an insurance policy that acts as a safeguard in case someone hits you or you hit another vehicle. Each policy is different and has various conditions, so you should inquire about the policy and its characteristics to know what it covers.
Attention to Traffic Camera Fines
El Salvador uses cameras to sanction traffic violations with fines. Make sure to know the rules: speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, ignoring red lights, and driving without lights from 6 pm to 6 am are common violations.
Be aware of what constitutes a violation (see list of infractions here). These fines cost $50, $100, or $150, with most being $150.
Don’t forget that if you drink alcohol, you must not drive under any circumstances, as violating this not only incurs a $150 USD fine but also means being handcuffed and subjected to a judicial process with prison sentences ranging from 2 to 4 years. Therefore, in El Salvador, if you drink, you must not drive.
Specific Speed Limitations
Within the city, you’ll find “Zone 30” areas where the maximum speed is 30 km/h. These zones are signposted but rare. Also, pay attention to general speed limits in the city and on highways.
Depending on where you drive, that’s the speed limit, and with traffic camera fines, you should drive according to the established limits to avoid surprises of having received one or more fines. Remember, exceeding the speed limit results in a $150 USD fine.
Verification of Previous Fines
Although optional, you can check if the vehicle has any previous fines to avoid surprises or undue responsibilities.
By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to rent a vehicle in El Salvador and enjoy an exceptional travel experience.
The key lies in preparation and knowledge of local regulations to avoid inconveniences. Get ready to take the wheel and discover the treasures of El Salvador with confidence and security!
